LAS VEGAS – Gary Sheehan, MBA, misses the profit margins of the old days. After all, who wouldn’t? However, the owner of Cape Medical Supply, Sandwich, Mass, has no time for nostalgia, believing instead that the next two years will be more critical than ever for providers who are serious about survival.
“The time is now,” says Sheehan, a presenter at this year’s Medtrade Spring. “The next two years will separate the providers who are going to survive and thrive from those who will die a slow death. The business needs to be rethought, and a lot of the leading providers will be in Las Vegas for Medtrade Spring. They will be talking to each other in the hallway, having beers together at night, and learning at the educational sessions. Medtrade Spring is the place you want to be.”
As a past recipient of HME News’ Best Provider in the Nation award, Sheehan has reduced expenses in response to lower reimbursements. His presentation, entitled How to Initiate and Sustain Lean Process Improvement, will be on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM in South Pacific D.
“Success can’t only be done with new products or payors,” says Sheehan. “You need to look at what is driving your expense lines. I would submit that it is personnel and processes. A lot of the processes that govern this industry are broken and inefficient. If folks take time to dig deeply in a methodical way, they will unlock significant value. Sitting in the office with your door shut just trying to grind through the way you always have will lead to the same results, and that’s not enough to make things happen.”
